FAQS

What is Hypnosis?

A state of relaxation and concentration at one with a state of heightened awareness induced by suggestion. It is a non-addictive power for good and is a natural manifestation of the mind at work.

Can I speak whilst in Hypnosis?

Yes, in Hypno-Analysis you would be encouraged to do so.

There seem to be different types of Hypnotherapy – What’s the difference?

Many Hypnotherapists (and Behaviour Therapists), although well meaning, have little understanding of the nature and power of Analytical Hypnotherapy because they might have not been properly trained, or simply do not understand in great enough depth the unconscious forces at work. Trying to think yourself better when you are in the grip of a nervous disorder or neurosis just will not ‘cut it’, or attempting to desensitise yourself against something will be traumatic at best and even if you were to be successful, the original unconscious causes will still be there and will probably find another way to ‘haunt your life’ as the symptom is converted to another problem. At best it may help you to control the problem, at it’s worst it will make the situation seem even more hopeless.

Not wishing to labour the point, utilising an analytical approach with a small degree of hypnosis has a much greater chance of success in securing a lasting release and freedom.

What’s the difference between Analytical Hypnotherapy and Counselling?
Surrey Hypnotherapy has treated a number of clients that have tried, unfortunately without success, Counselling. Surrey Hypnotherapy has discovered that, by harnessing the unconscious, many, many, more emotionally based issues can be identified and resolved than have ever even been thought about, using the conscious part of the mind, using Counselling. Surrey Hypnotherapy considers that, for emotionally based issues, Analytical Hypnotherapy cannot be compared to Counselling, Put simply, Analytical Hypnotherapy is far, far, superior to Counselling for the effective resolution of emotional issues.

Are there some people that cannot be hypnotised?

No. (Except mentally handicapped people, people who are heavily under the influence of alcohol or drugs, and very young children – relax, if you have read this far, you can be hypnotised ! )

Are any drugs or tablets used?

No. None whatsoever.

Will I be aware of what is happening?

Yes.

Is it dangerous at all?

Not at all. Of all the therapies available Hypnosis must be the least dangerous of all. Consider for example, drugs, which in general can be toxic in excessive amounts, there being the danger of an overdose (e.g. Paracetamol); drugs can also be addictive and can have associated side effects such as drowsiness and other symptoms. And with Acupuncture, for example, there must always be a slight risk of an infection arising from the use of dirty needles. However with Hypnosis there is very little that can go wrong in the hands of a trained professional therapist; it is after all just a process of listening to spoken words whilst in a state of relaxation. - Although I wouldn’t recommend the use of Hypnosis tapes, for example, whilst driving a car or operating machinery ! But within a therapeutic setting, in a consulting room, Hypnotherapy must be the safest and most natural therapy available.

Is there any cause at all for concern?

None whatsoever. Hypnosis is a proven therapeutic aid.

How many visits will I need?

Simple problems, such as smoking, nail biting, slimming, pre-test nerves etc. usually require a single session and the success rate is surprisingly high. The more deep-rooted nervous disorders need ‘analytical’ rather than ‘suggestion’ therapy which usually consists of about 6 to 8 weekly sessions.

Can I be influenced to do anything against my will or nature?

No. In fact you would be shocked out of the hypnotic state immediately anything like this was suggested to you.

Can ‘normal’ people be Analysed?

Not only can be, but should be. For an insight into yourself, it has no equal.

Can I bring someone with me to the initial consultation?

Yes, of course.

Can you help with medical problems?

Analysis can be used to resolve many problems of a physical nature that are psychically caused (i.e. ‘psychosomatic’ problems). Suggestion therapy can be of assistance in the relief of pain. However for medical problems it is essential that you first consult your GP regarding the problem.

Does it always work?

No, no more than any other form of therapy, be it alternative, complementary, or orthodox medicine. Peter will soon detect if the therapy is not working well and discharge a client from therapy so that they may seek the help they need elsewhere. Also, with this form of therapy, another therapist might be able to obtain the desired result where the first one could not, because of a different interaction and relationship (usually at an unconscious level) between the client and the therapist.

Which is the governing body for Hypnotherapy in the UK?

There isn’t one. In the UK there are many different hypnotherapy and psychotherapy organisations and none of them has precedence over any of the others; the UK government encourages a process a process of self-regulation. The largest training school in the UK is the Hypnotherapy Control Board, the training arm of the International Association of Hypno-Analysts; having trained thousands of therapists since it started in 1981. Also, the IAH currently has the largest membership of practitioners in practice.
